| Fruit Of Glory, who finished second in the
Slatch Farm Stud Flying Fillies' Stakes 12 months ago, gained a richly-deserved
success in this year's renewal of the Pontefract Listed contest. John Jenkins'
consistent mare was beaten two and a half lengths by Goldeva last year but
gained her revenge this time under a good ride from Michael Fenton. The 10-1
chance was settled on the heels of the leaders as Dame De Noche and Paradise
Isle disputed the lead at a good pace. As the pacemakers began to tie up,
Fenton kicked Fruit Of Glory into a decisive lead just inside the last of the
six furlongs. She was strongly pressed in the closing stages by both Indian
Maiden and Goldeva, but had enough in reserve to hold on by a neck and
three-quarters of a length and net the £29,000 winner's purse.
Since scoring at Ripon in May, Fruit Of Glory had performed with credit
without adding to her haul of eight career victories and last time she ran
particularly well from a poor draw at Goodwood. Her owner Richard Hill said:
"She's been so consistent and she ran well in the Stewards' Cup. She was
on the wrong side and she finished second on her side, so she deserved this.
"The trainer will be over the moon. "We are thinking about a
Listed race at Doncaster for her but we don't know yet. We might try for a
Group Three with her. Fenton, who was riding the six-year-old for the first
time, added: "Everything went to plan. "I had a chat with the owner
and he said 'don't hit the front too soon because she'll idle in front', which
she did. "But I had to go because I didn't want to disappoint her and
she's just held on."

"We are not going to overdo it with her because she's
proved herself now and she'll go to the paddocks next season."
